2009 IFC and IBC Hazardous Materials
Overview:
This seminar examines the application of code requirements in the 2009 International Fire Code
(IFC) to determine compliance for the storage, display, handling and dispensing of hazardous
materials and the 2009 International Building Code (IBC) (specifically Chapters 3 and 4). It
provides IFC requirements that are driven by specific materials stored or used and IBC
requirements that are driven by the Group H occupancy classifications assigned to the building. It
also provides information on the design of any building utilizing hazardous materials requiring
coordination between the building and fire codes.

Objectives:
•        Locate and describe applicable hazardous materials in the 2009 IFC and IBC.
•        Define control areas and identify when control areas can be applied as an alternative to
Group H classification.
•        Define mercantile display and determine how mercantile display can be applied as an
alternative to Group H classification.
•        Determine when a building or structure should be classified as a Group H occupancy.
•        Describe how each Group H classification impacts corresponding height and area limitation,
mixed uses and means of egress for a building or structure.
•        Classify materials as to appropriate hazard and determine allowable exempt amounts for
each material.
