Class Description
Battery Energy Storage Systems – IFC Section 1207 and NFPA 855 Compliance
This 4-hour course will provide an overview of the hazards associated with batteries in various formats, including e-mobility, electric vehicles, battery storage, and residential and commercial energy storage systems. The course will discuss the existing regulatory framework associated with battery energy storage and residential and commercial energy storage. It will discuss best practices for safety of batteries, with a specific focus on lithium-ion based energy storage. It will provide a foundation for future in depth learning of the applicable codes and standards for residential and commercial energy storage systems.
Solar Photovoltaic Power Systems – IFC Section 1205
This 2-hour course will provide an understanding of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems. The installation of solar panels on building roofs, carports, and other overhead canopies can present significant fire risks as well as impeding fire department roof access. These risks and those of ground installation locations will be discussed, along with the associated dangers of DC current systems. This course will also provide a fundamental background on Building Integrated PV systems as regulated by the International Building Code, and ground-mounted systems such as agrivoltaics and solar grazing.
Electrical Vehicle Safety
This 1-hour course will discuss fire department response and safety for electric vehicles, including a discussion of proposed changes relating to EV charging in the 2027 International Fire Code and the 2026 Edition of NFPA 855. Loss history and recent incident lessons learned will be reviewed to enhance pre-incident planning operations.

Instructor
Todd LaBerge, P.E., is a licensed Fire Protection Engineer with 30 years of experience in industrial facilities, hazardous materials operations, high-piled combustible storage, and battery energy storage hazards. Mr. LaBerge has served as the Worldwide Fire Safety Director for Intel Corporation, provided support to the United States Military, and has served as a Fire Marshal /Managing FPE for the United States Department of Energy. Service to the development of Codes and Standards includes work on NFPA 101, NFPA 400, NFPA 420, and the International Fire Code workgroups on Battery Storage/ R&D/ Micromobility Devices. Mr. LaBerge currently provides fire protection code consulting to private industry as well as local Fire Departments and Building Departments.

ICC 2021/2024 IBC Multi-Family Construction - With 2024/2027 Code Hearing Insights

Class Description
Overview of the requirements for multi-family dwellings in the International Building Code. Type V-A construction may be the most difficult type of construction to build a structure by. This seminar discusses the design, construction and inspection of Group R-2 occupancies including, building planning, fire-resistive rated construction, fire protection requirements and means of egress requirements.
Instructor
William "Bill" Clayton has been involved in the construction industry as a contractor and designer since the early 1970’s in Oregon, Washington and Colorado. He later became a roofing inspector in 1991, then advanced to a combination building inspector and eventually became a plans examiner in 1994. Bill was CBO of a large Colorado jurisdiction from 2007 to 2015 when he was hired away and went to work for Colorado Code Consulting as a consultant, inspector, plans examiner and instructor. Bill has 22 ICBO & ICC certifications, 4 FEMA Certifications, as well as State of Colorado 3rd Party Public School Inspector, State of California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Safety Assessment Inspector, and certified Fire Stop Inspector. Bill is a member of the ICC IEBC 2024 code committee and remains passionate about teaching all aspects of the codes.
